Dowry persists because it is embedded in India's social fabric, where historical precedents, economic aspirations, and patriarchal norms converge. Legal measures alone fail without grassroots change: empowering women economically, enforcing anti-dowry laws rigorously, and transforming cultural attitudes through education. As one activist notes, young men and women refusing dowry are pivotal to breaking this cycle. Until then, dowry remains a "social necessity" disguised as tradition.
