I recently heard that they’ve started inspecting underground utilities in our city before road repairs. They walk around with equipment that scans the area. I got curious about how this actually works. The city is small and has a lot of old utility lines. As far as I understand, there often aren’t any proper maps.

Given that some of the networks were laid decades ago and the data might have been lost or could be inaccurate, I’m curious how they map underground infrastructure in cities like these. Do they simply drive down streets with equipment to collect information, or is there a more complex process involving data processing? How accurate is this data? Do they still have to “check it manually” during construction?

I work for the city council and was involved in a mapping project in our town. While preparing to renovate several streets, we realized that the old maps no longer reflected reality. After spending a long time looking for a contractor, we eventually settled on Maya Global TM because they have 40 years of experience with similar projects. They didn't just work in the field. First, they gathered all the archival data they could find. Then, they went out with their equipment to scan the area. And found several sections of pipes that weren’t marked on any maps, and a few voids. While it's not a perfect diagram down to the centimeter, it's more than sufficient for planning the work. This project is already paying for itself; I’m expecting a bonus for it.
