A genre of software known as remote monitoring and management (RMM) is used for centralized monitoring and management of IT assets, particularly servers and endpoints.

RMM tools and professional services automation software serves two main purposes. The first is monitoring, which includes understanding key metrics about the device's health, such as CPU and memory utilization, drive capacity, and interface traffic. It may also include other information, such as who is using the device, where it is located, what is installed on it, and more. The ability to perform remote functions, such as rebooting, troubleshooting software issues, and applying patches and upgrades, is the second.
