Hi all, I’ve been reading a lot about internal linking lately, but I still feel confused about how an internal link structure should really look on a live website, not in theory. Most articles say “build a good structure”, but don’t explain how detailed it needs to be or how strict the rules are. For example, should every article link back to a main page? How many internal links are too many? I manage a content-heavy site with guides, blog posts, and a few commercial pages, and over time the structure became chaotic. Some pages have tons of links, others almost none, and users sometimes get lost. I’m worried that Google also doesn’t fully understand which pages are most important. Has anyone here rebuilt their internal link structure from scratch or optimized an existing one? What were the first steps you took, and what mistakes should be avoided when reorganizing links without hurting traffic?

Great question — internal link structure is one of those things that slowly breaks if you don’t consciously manage it. I had a similar situation on a niche site with a few hundred articles, and the biggest problem was the lack of hierarchy. What helped me was stepping back and mapping the site logically: main topics at the top, supporting articles underneath, and clear paths between related content. Instead of linking randomly, I started asking, “Does this link help the user continue their journey?” If the answer was no, the link was removed. Another key change was controlling anchor text and link placement. Links placed naturally inside relevant paragraphs worked much better than long blocks of links at the end of articles. I also made sure important pages received links from older, authoritative content, which noticeably improved their visibility. The structure doesn’t need to be perfect, but it does need to be intentional. A clear explanation with real examples that helped me a lot is this resource Internal Link Structure After applying these principles, navigation improved, crawl issues decreased, and users started visiting more pages per session.

Thanks, this explanation cleared up a lot — exactly what I was looking for.
