Without chimney caps installation a chimney becomes completely exposed to the elements and can quickly start to deteriorate. Rainwater is one of the biggest threats because it can seep inside the brick structure and mix with creosote which then creates acidic reactions that damage mortar joints and metal components. When deterioration starts it weakens the entire structure and increases the risk of collapse or expensive rebuilding. Another major problem that occurs is the entry of animals such as birds squirrels raccoons and even insects which can create nests inside the flue. These nests block ventilation and increase the risk of smoke backup which can push harmful carbon monoxide into living areas. Debris such as leaves branches and wind driven litter can also cause blockages and lead to chimney fires. Sparks can travel upward without a cap and escape to nearby trees rooftops or materials which is extremely dangerous in dry weather.
