Rifagut 550 mg contains Rifaximin 550 mg, a broad-spectrum, gut-acting antibiotic. It stays mostly inside the intestines and is minimally absorbed into the bloodstream.
Common Uses
Doctors commonly prescribe Rifagut 550 mg for:
1. Hepatic Encephalopathy (HE)
To reduce recurrence of HE episodes in patients with chronic liver disease.
Works by lowering ammonia-producing intestinal bacteria.
2. IBS-D (Irritable Bowel Syndrome with Diarrhea)
Helps reduce bloating, abdominal pain, and diarrhea.
3. Travelers’ Diarrhea
Caused by E. coli (non-invasive strains).
How It Works
- Acts locally in the intestine. - Reduces harmful bacteria. - Improves gut flora balance. - Decreases toxin production (especially ammonia). - Doctor-Determined Dosage
Actual dosage must be given by a healthcare professional, but commonly:
- Hepatic encephalopathy: long-term fixed regimen - IBS-D: typically a short course - Traveler’s diarrhea: short duration
Never self-prescribe Rifaximin. It must be taken exactly as advised.
Side Effects
Usually mild:
- Nausea - Headache - Gas or bloating - Abdominal pain - Fatigue
Rare:
- Severe allergic reaction
C. difficile–associated diarrhea (rare but serious)
Precautions
- Inform your doctor if you have severe liver disease. - Not helpful for diarrhea with blood or fever. - Avoid if allergic to rifamycin antibiotics.
Drug Interactions
Minimal because of low absorption, but still inform your doctor if you take:
- Immunosuppressants - Warfarin - Other antibiotics
