Few engines among contemporary performance powerplants have garnered the same acclaim, controversy, and cult-like admiration as the BMW N54 engine. When it was first introduced in the middle of the 2000s, BMW's technical philosophy underwent a significant change from naturally aspirated straight-sixes to smaller-displacement, turbocharged engines that were intended to satisfy demands for efficiency and performance.
