I get that they get money, but how does this actually help the team win? Does it go to training or just into their pockets? I want to make sure my donation is actually helping the program succeed.

It helps in two major ways. First, it keeps the player happy and financially stable so they can focus on school and ball instead of worrying about money. Second, and more importantly, a strong NIL program attracts better recruits. Players talk to each other. It is basically an investment in the future talent of the roster.
