In mid-2024, Google introduced AI Overviews , a search engine feature that uses generative AI to deliver concise and detailed summaries at the top of search results.
After understanding the user's query, AI Overviews' generative AI generates synthesized answers from a variety of trusted sources across the web, guiding the user to key information about their query without having to navigate multiple pages, including ads that add value to the query .
Such is the potential of this new feature that Sundar Pichai himself (Google CEO) said that “ AI Overviews is one of the most significant improvements to Google Search in 20 years . ”
By 2025, the updates implemented in AI Overviews will radically transform Google search and Ads programs. Businesses will have more opportunities to match their pages and products with users' search intent .
Let's look at the following example of how ads work in AI Overviews:
Phone searching “how do I get a grass stain out of jeans” on Google and finding Shopping ads in the AI ??Overview
If a user searches "How to remove grass stains from jeans?" on Google, the AI ??Overviews tool will generate a direct response with tips and tricks for removing the stains. It will also include an advertisement for a stain remover , thus maximizing advertisers' visibility and profitability .
Thanks to AI Overview ads, Google will have a greater ability to connect users with fully personalized results. This way, Google Search will become an interface that displays key product information with increasing clarity and precision, including important elements such as user reviews, price comparisons, purchase locations, and more.
Google Lens: The technology that's changing marketing on Google Search
More than 20 billion visual searches are conducted monthly using Google Lens . It's the fastest-growing search format on Google among younger generations.
To perform visual searches with Lens, users can point their camera , take a screenshot , or long-press on an image while browsing. These actions allow them to search for information about items like: the clothing they see on a mannequin while walking past a store, a skin condition, a strange plant in their garden, a menu in a different language, a math problem in their notebook, or an incomplete recipe.
If the user is viewing an online backpack catalog, they can long-press on the image of the backpack they're interested in. When they do this, Google Lens springs into action to show them identical or similar backpacks available in other stores.
In fact, if a user is on the street and sees someone else with a flashy backpack, they can point their camera at that backpack and allow Google Lens to search for them online.
