Harvesting watermelon at the right time ensures the sweetest, juiciest fruit. Since watermelons don’t continue to ripen after being picked, timing is everything. One of the most reliable signs is the drying of the tendril closest to the fruit stem—when it turns brown and shriveled, your melon is likely ripe.

Next, check the underside of the watermelon. The “ground spot,” where the fruit rests on the soil, should be a creamy yellow color. If it’s still white or light green, the melon needs more time. The rind should also appear dull rather than shiny and be tough enough to resist pressure from a fingernail.

Another common method is the “thump test.” Tap the watermelon with your knuckles—if it sounds deep and hollow, it’s probably ready. If the sound is dull or high-pitched, it may still be immature.

A ripe watermelon will also feel heavy for its size, indicating high water content and ripeness. Make sure the shape is symmetrical and uniform, with no soft spots or irregularities.

By using these combined signs, you’ll improve your chances of picking your watermelon at peak ripeness, giving you the best flavor and texture straight from the garden.

I just tried the Watermelon Juice Recipe and it was amazing! The flavors were fresh and naturally sweet. The instructions were easy to follow, and it made a perfect refreshing drink for a sunny day.
