I’ve noticed that sourcing Potato Dextrose Agar in California can be a bit hit-or-miss, depending on where you are. In Northern California, there seem to be more options with universities or research labs selling excess stock, while in the southern part of the state, it often feels like you’re stuck with national suppliers or online marketplaces.
Is anyone else noticing this pattern? I usually work with PDA for culturing various fungi in a small lab environment. I’ve tried both pre-poured and powdered forms. Both are fine, but local availability is inconsistent. Sometimes I’ve had to wait over a week for deliveries, which slows things down.
Just curious if others working with PDA across California are running into similar issues. Is there more local access in areas near ag schools or biotech hubs? I’d also be interested to hear if anyone has tried making their own agar from scratch as a workaround. Not looking for brand names—just general sourcing challenges or workarounds that people have found in-state.
