When flying with United Airlines, knowing the carry-on size policy can help you avoid unexpected fees and hassles at the airport. United allows each passenger to bring one carry-on bag and one personal item onboard. The maximum dimensions for the carry-on bag are 9 inches x 14 inches x 22 inches (including handles and wheels), while the personal item must fit within 9 inches x 10 inches x 17 inches to ensure it fits under the seat.
However, if you're traveling in Basic Economy, you’re only permitted to bring a personal item unless you qualify for an exception, such as being a MileagePlus Premier member or a primary cardholder of a qualifying United credit card. If you bring a full-sized carry-on while flying Basic Economy, you may be required to check it at the gate, incurring a $25 gate handling fee in addition to the standard checked bag fee.
For travelers flying on United Express regional flights, carry-on size restrictions may be tighter due to limited overhead bin space, and you might need to gate-check your bag.
To ensure a smooth journey, check out our detailed blog on United carry on bag weight limit policy for more tips and guidelines.
