Cochlear implants can significantly improve the hearing abilities of individuals with severe to profound hearing loss, but the experience of hearing with a cochlear implant is different from "normal" hearing. A cochlear implant consists of an external processor worn behind the ear, which captures sound and converts it into electrical signals. These signals are then transmitted to an internal implant placed under the skin behind the ear. The implant stimulates the auditory nerve directly, bypassing the damaged hair cells in the cochlea (the inner ear's sensory organ responsible for hearing).
