While sun exposure is a significant risk factor for skin cancer, it is possible for skin cancer symptoms to develop in areas not typically exposed to the sun. Basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma, the most common types of skin cancer, are often associated with sun-exposed areas like the face, neck, arms, and hands. However, they can also develop in areas that receive little to no sun exposure, such as the scalp, genital area, or inside the mouth. Melanoma, a more aggressive type of skin cancer, can arise on any part of the body, including areas not exposed to the sun. Melanoma can develop from existing moles or appear as a new pigmented growth, and it can occur on the palms of the hands, soles of the feet, under the nails, or even internally, such as in the eyes or mucous membranes. Therefore, it is important to be vigilant and conduct regular self-examinations of the entire body, including areas that are not typically exposed to the sun.
