sildenafil (Viagra) and Revatio (PAH)Sildenafil is a medication used to treat erectile dysfunction in men (Viagra brand) and pulmonary arterial hypertension in women and men (Revatio brand). Sildenafil works by blocking an enzyme that breaks down cGMP, a substance that promotes muscle relaxation and blood vessel dilation.
This medication is not recommended for use with nitrate medications (eg, nitroglycerin) as it can lower your blood pressure to dangerous levels. It may interact with some other medications as well.
What is this medication used for?
Sildenafil (Viagra) treats erectile dysfunction (ED). It increases blood flow to the penis and helps you get or keep an erection when sexually aroused. It is in a class of medications called phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibitors. Revatio treats pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH).
It lowers blood pressure in the lungs and allows you to breathe more easily. It is in a class of medications that block the enzyme PDE-5, which normally breaks down nitric oxide. Nitric oxide is a chemical in the body that causes blood vessels to relax. By blocking this enzyme, Revatio reduces pulmonary hypertension and improves your ability to exercise.
Revatio is taken by mouth orally (by mouth, not in the nose) once a day, with or without food. It is important to take it exactly as prescribed by your doctor. If you
miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember, but not more than 24 hours before your next scheduled dose. Taking too much of this medication can cause serious,
life-threatening side effects.
This medication should not be taken by anyone with a history of heart attack or stroke. It may also increase your risk of these conditions if you take certain other
medicines, such as ACE inhibitors (aspirin, cimetidine, clopidogrel), alpha-2 adrenergic agonists, aliskiren, diuretics, nitrates, or guanylate cyclase stimulators,
including riociguat.
You should not take Revatio if you have a history of uncontrolled high blood pressure, heart disease, liver disease, kidney disease, or diabetes. Your doctor will
monitor your blood pressure while you are on this medicine.
