Before a driver can get their commercial driver's license they have to pass both an MTO medical exam and a Ministry of Transportation (MTO) physical. The MTO medical form for commercial drivers is completed by your doctor and sent directly to the ministry. Once approved, it will be issued with your new license. What do I need?: For the medical exam: A valid Ontario Driver's Licence or ID card and A current signed Medical Report Form.

What happens if I fail? If you fail any part of the medical examination, or if there are any other indications that might suggest that you may not meet medical fitness requirements to operate a vehicle as a commercial driver, then MTO may request additional information from your physician or require follow-up testing.

How Often Do I Need To Renew My Medical Certificate?

Every five years, you are required to renew your medical certificate with a Ministry of Transportation (MTO) Medical Form. This form is available at any Ministry of Transportation office or Driver Examination Centre. To complete this form, please be sure that you have your updated medical information. You can also use your driver abstract issued by the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA). If you are applying for a Class A medical certificate only, then the medical exam will cost $100 plus applicable taxes; if you're applying for both classes A and B then it will cost $200 plus applicable taxes. There is no renewal fee as long as your original medical certificate has not expired. However, if you do not provide an update after a change in medical status, then you will be charged an additional $50 plus applicable taxes when renewing your medical certificate.

In order to qualify for an MTO Medical Certificate: The applicant must show proof of his/her identity - either through personal photo identification or documents such as a passport, birth certificate, or social insurance number card.

What Are The Consequences Of Not Having A Valid Medical Certificate?

The consequences of not having a valid medical certificate vary depending on what type of commercial driver's license you hold. If you have a Class D license and don't have a valid medical certificate, your driver's license will be canceled. Commercial passenger vehicle drivers with a Class D license are also required to have a valid Medical Examiner's Certificate (MEC) by law. If they do not, their driving privileges will be suspended for as long as their MEC is invalid. If you have a Class A or B driver's license, not having a valid medical certificate won't affect your ability to drive. You'll just have to show an officer that you're medically fit when asked for identification or during traffic stops or investigations. A company may refuse to hire someone who has an active Medical Review Board restriction if there are reasonable grounds. However, if the restriction is current but inactive due to age or because it was removed after it expired; this won't pose any problem.

How Do I Get A Medical Certificate?

In Ontario, all commercial driver's license applicants are required to have a medical exam performed by an authorized medical examiner. If you are applying for a CVOR certificate, your medical exam must be completed before getting a CVOR certificate. If you are applying for a CLP or D class license, your medical exam must be completed before getting your CLP or D class license. You can find more information on how to get a medical certificate and the list of approved medical examiners on the Ministry of Transportation website. You will also find MTO's Medical form for commercial drivers and other important documents related to your medical examination on this site.
