There are a large range of fees the processors consider such as application fees, set up fees, gateway access, fixed fees, monthly minimums, charge-back fees for returned merchandise and that's barely mentioning just a few of the most common charges a merchant must endure. And, there are a large number of people involved in each of the fee categories, all of which have their hand in your cash register!
It becomes so confusing many merchants become a digital payments agent just go to Sam's Club or Costco and buy their set up with program fees starting in the neighborhood of 1.49 percentage rate plus $.20 per transaction fee. Store owners simply resolve to bear the burden of this necessary evil as a cost of doing business.
Actually the only thing that's happening here is small discounts gained from buying from the large retailers who because of their sheer volume of customers get reduced rates. It is nothing more than the "larger volume, lower price" rule that's been around since Stone Age trading began.
