In "The Three Apples," a medieval Arabian Nights story, the protagonist Ja'far ibn Yahya by chance discovers a crucial item toward the end of the story that reveals the culprit behind the murder to have been his own slave all along. This is the earliest instance of this True Crime Stories With a Twist ending in a murder mystery. Plot twists are unexpected tale developments where either a stunning event occurs or a shocking revelation is made. In most cases, the storyteller will create anticipation before "twisting" that anticipation by exposing new information through later plot points.
