If you’re anything like me, then you’ve always wanted to visit the Van Gogh museum! One of the most famous artists in history, Vincent van Gogh left an immeasurable legacy in both modern and post-impressionist art. His paintings are world-renowned for their emotional power and mastery of color.
The Van Gogh Museum is one of Amsterdam’s most popular museums and one of the best in Europe. It houses an extensive collection of works by Van Gogh, as well as a huge archive of the artist’s personal correspondences and belongings.
It’s been in operation since 1973 and attracts close to a million visitors each year! In fact, it was the first major museum to be built in Amsterdam after World War II. So what’s the catch? Well… most people can’t afford to get inside.
Typically, a full-day pass for the museum will cost you about €25 (and that’s after you pay your local taxes). This might seem reasonable at first glance. But then, you realize that every one of those €25 will pay for the next visitor’s entrance fee.
So here’s where it gets tricky. On average, a full-day pass will only let you in for about 5 hours at a time. This means that you’ll have to make exceptionally timed visits if you hope to get everything out of the museum that it offers! This is because most things are very time sensitive – they only last roughly two weeks before they’re put into storage so that they can be put on display again three months later.
If you’re in Amsterdam for only a few days, that’s not an issue. However, if you’re staying for weeks at a time, it does start to get very inconvenient… in more ways than one. The Van Gogh Museum will often close late on Fridays (around 6 pm), and there’s no direct public transportation from the city center – so you’ll have to pay out of your own pocket for a taxi.
Worse yet, the museum closes once every two years for about six months! What does this mean? It means almost everyone has to plan their trips around this one-time slot. If you happen to go off-season, you’re either paying more for your Van Gogh Museum Tickets or missing out on a good portion of the museum’s collection.
And when you think it can’t get any worse, penalties begin to kick in if you miss a payment. Some people are being forced to pay upwards of €1,000 to replace their lost membership cards! A hefty price indeed…
But there’s hope yet! The Van Gogh Museum recently announced that they would be willing to support the use of cryptocurrencies. Cryptocurrencies have become very popular after the Bitcoin boom in 2017. They’re relatively untraceable to law enforcement and can be used to anonymize transfer funds across the world.
You would think that this kind of thing would tick off the museum’s existing members, but they seem very open to the idea. The museum has already partnered with a company called CryptoLoot, which allows members to pay their entrance fees with their contactless payment card (a handy feature if there ever was one).
This new partnership will allow more visitors to get in and experience a piece of art that would otherwise have been lost forever! The good news is that the museum has made it clear that they won’t be making any more changes, but this kind of partnership is bound to make many a Van Gogh fan very happy.
